What is Forest School?

I will always look back on the magical experience of undertaking the level 3 Forest School training in the woods with such fondness. Forest School has become very popular and widely known. Many schools and early years settings now follow the principles.

The Nurturing Wild approach is inspired by the Forest School ethos, however as the adults are present, this felt like a wonderful opportunity to support parents.

Nurturing Wild sessions are carefully planned to support parents and children through nature-based outdoor learning.

PRINCIPLE 01

Continuity

Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.

At Nurturing Wild we offer a discount on booking a block of sessions. By attending on a weekly basis, this will support your child to connect with nature and build in confidence. Our highly skilled team are reflective practitioners who will adapt ongoing sessions.

PRINCIPLE 02

Natural Environment

Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.

Our Forest School is based at urban sites around South London. We aim to choose wooded areas or green natural spaces.

PRINCIPLE 03

Learner Centred

Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.

Our highly experienced team draw upon their knowledge and passion for education to deliver Forest School sessions. We follow a child-centred approach based around the individual needs of the child. All sessions are child-led and children are encouraged to follow their own curiosities and interests.

PRINCIPLE 04

Holistic

Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

Our mission at Nurturing Wild is to promote wellbeing and build self confidence. We work alongside therapeutic trained professionals to deliver our positive parenting sessions.

PRINCIPLE 05

Supported Risks

Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

We carefully consider the benefits of risky play such as log balancing, loose parts play vs the risks. Thorough risk assessments are carried out for each site. Julia is a level 2 Paediatric and Outdoor First Aider.

PRINCIPLE 06

Professional

Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

Nurturing Wild sessions are delivered by Julia who is a qualified Level 3 Forest School Leader and has over 14 years early years and primary school teaching experience.

Nurturing Wild sessions follow early years best practice and aim to follow the ethos of Forest School in our approach,
