“Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions.“
The Forest School Association
History
Forest School was originally inspired by the Danish outdoor approach to education. An Early Years department from Bridgewater College visited Denmark in 1993. This started the development of the Forest School ethos in the United Kingdom. Today many schools and outdoor groups are led by trained Forest School Leaders nationwide.

1 Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
At Nurturing Wild we offer a minimum of 5 weekly block sessions to develop a strong connection with nature and build a sense of community within each group. Our highly skilled team are reflective practitioners who will adapt ongoing sessions.

2 Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
Our Forest School is based at urban sites around South London. We aim to choose wooded areas or green natural spaces.

3 Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
Our highly experienced team draw upon their knowledge and passion for education to deliver Forest School sessions. We follow a child-centred approach based around the individual needs of the child. All sessions are child-led and children are encouraged to follow their own curiosities and interests.

4 Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
Our mission at Nurturing Wild is to promote wellbeing and raise self confidence through the Forest School approach. We work alongside therapeutic trained professionals to deliver our positive parenting sessions.

5 Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
We carefully consider the benefits of risky play such as log balancing, loose parts play vs the risks. Thorough risk assessments are carried by the Forest School Level 3 Leader. Our Forest School Leaders are qualified Paediatric and Outdoor First Aiders.

6 Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
Nurturing Wild sessions are delivered by a qualified Level 3 Forest School Leader. We highly value our team and provide opportunities for ongoing continuing professional development. We also welcome and support volunteers who wish to gain experience.
We follow the six core principles of Forest School as set out by the Forest School Association. To watch their inspiring video ‘What is Forest School?’ click here.
